Painting houses
The aim of the project is to rejuvenate Lakkos and bring people back into the area. Lakkos was never a fashionable place and it's bad reputation since the 1930s has remained. Many locals will still not walk through it, even though it is now a safe and friendly place. This needs to be turned around. Painting the old houses fresh colours has made them stand out from the large apartment buildings, that surround the area. Since the new painted houses and opening of the Lakkos kafeneon, and Bourbouladiko taverna things have made a sharp turn around. Now most evenings the square is packed and you have to book seats in advance in the taverna Bourvouladiko
Festival Events
Also in September 2015 the Municipality of Heraklion moved two of their summer festival performances into the Lakkos square. Both evenings were totally packed with people wanting to see the performances in the new space. Most locals know about the fabulous musical history of the area, and have proven to be very excited about performances returning. The square is now ready for more and hopefully the park will follow soon. There are now plans being made for a big traditional and modern arts focused festival to happen next year!
Street art
'The Lakkos art laboratory' is a new group of contemporary artists. Heraklion has plenty of traditional artists but modern artists have in the past needed to move to Athens or further to showcase their ideas. The art lab wants to explore culture in the public space, as well as implementation of original individual and group actions. The first project of the team was to create an open air art gallery in the Lakkos park and other areas in the neighborhood. The Art Labʼs working fields relate to various aspects of contemporary culture. On the ground in the public space, street art, the fine and applied arts, theater and musical performances, the performing arts, architecture and the organisation of exhibitions. The Vision of the Art Lab is to become a catalyst of contemporary cultural work produced in the city of Heraklion, and its interaction with the community. Through its activities, the team wishes to contribute to the talent of new people, ideas and proposals. The aim is the creation of alternative institutions.
May 2016 we had the group 'Dienstag Abend' from Vienna do an art intervention in Lakkos and two other parts of the city.

Lakkos has a strong connections to Rebetika music. But we also would like to showcase other forms of experimental and modern music. As the project is still young we are working towards solutions for how this can be done.
